Meet Pingu and its BFF, a stuffed penguin. (No one knows yet if Pingu is a she or a he.) This baby had to be separated from its siblings because they kept eating all of its fish and it was getting runty. They removed the three-week-old Pingu, but then it got lonely! (Sigh.) Finally, they provided a cuddly, googly-eyed stuffed penguin for Pingue. It will be snuggling this amiable creature until it's strong enough to compete with the others in his colony. I almost forgot about this adorable kid. She was 7 when someone recorded her hamming it up while playing the organ, so she must be a whopping 8-years-old now. She is having so much fun, and is in such command of this instrument, that when her teacher or father comes by to check her progress, the force field of her confidence forces him to beat a retreat. (I love her little wrist motions, too and the sudden smile.) What a cutie!

Hamster Who Evaded Firemen With Chocolate Camera Is Found Safe and Well

Call off the searches, people! Fudgie the hamster has finally returned from his nine-day spell on the lam . . . or should I say on the ham? The little dude made a break for it while a 6-year-old girl was hammiesitting (the lesson here: hamsters can outsmart kids) and holed up under the floorboards. Firemen brought in a chocolate camera to coax him out, but Fudgie wasn't having any of it until he was good 'n' ready to come out. I know what you're thinking: chocolate camera? Firemen? Pandas Given Chicken Soup to Soothe Stress

I guess chicken soup is good for the panda's soul, too. According to the Telegraph, zookeepers in Sichuan, China, have been feeding good ol' chicken soup to pandas Xiwang and Weiwei to help calm them during an increase in zoo visitors, and to give them a nutritional boost during the colder months. Turns out pandas don't just eat bamboo, they're known to eat insects and small birds occasionally in the wild. Although probably not stewed with veggies and spices and served piping hot. Mmm . . . soup.

This technically falls under the sad 'n' cute category. Environmental disasters decimate animal populations, and oil spills are particularly horrible. These folks from IFAW (The International Fund for Animal Welfare), who rehabilitated penguin victims of an oil spill, got to release them back into the ocean. Warning though: this video, filmed in Brazil, moves from cute to sad, but ultimately back to cute again.

Keeping elephants in zoos is controversial. Some people say they shouldn't be in captivity, others say allowing people to see endangered animals makes them care about their continued survival. I don't know enough about it to say, but I do know that it's touching to see this tiny (by elephant standards!) baby elephant finally bonding with his mother, Rose-Tu (who had been a little rough with him at the beginning). Zookeepers kept watch to make sure that Rose-Tu was gentle with the little one and according to this news story, "The calf leaned against her wrinkled side, and she gathered him between her front legs, a sign of affection." Cute!

Daisy the Sphynx cat (aka the hairless breed) is calmly watching as her brother Luke messes around with the family Chihuahua, Chacha, while "I'll Be Home For Christmas" plays in the background!
