What the hell am I talking about, you ask? Well, serendipity would have it that I was talking to GiggleGirl about the expression "jumping the shark" today. This term comes from the infamous moment on September 20, 1977, when "The Fonz" from "Happy Days" donned his famous leather jacket, went water skiing, and jumped a shark on his skis. TV critics and anyone with taste or brains realized this was the moment the show had finally killed itself; the moment the original premise of the show was so betrayed, its vision having veered so off course, that there was no point going on. And it's used now to describe the moment that anything betrays its original purpose. And what do you know, it was thirty years ago to the day. Freaky, man.

Did you ever see the Arrested Development episode where they have him jump over a dead shark on a fishing boat in a little nod to his infamous Happy Days shark-jumping? Good times.

I have seen that episode of Arrested Development that Mallomar refers to. It's hilarious - and at the same time he refers to Burger King, the sponsor of that episode due to the show running out of funding. The double meaning of that scene, and the sheer self-effacing self-referentiation (is that a word?) is what made that show great. There is also a scene in AD where he starts to comb his hair in the mirror, but like the Fonz stops and does the "aaaay" shrug.
